Un ecosistema és el conjunt d'éssers vius que habiten en un lloc determinat,les relacions que estableixen entre si, així com les característiques físiques d'un lloc on viuen i les relacions entre el medi i els organismes. Un ecosistema té en compte les complexes interaccions entre els organismes com les plantes, animals, bacteris, algues, fongs i altres. Aquestes interaccions entre els organismes es donen a través del que s'anomena xarxa tròfica o xarxa alimentària que és una sèrie de cadenes alimentàries o tròfiques íntimament relacionades per les que circulen energia i materials en un ecosistema.
Així, s'entén per cadena alimentària o tròfica cadascuna de les relacions alimentàries que s'estableixen de forma lineal entre organismes que pertanyen a diferents nivells tròfics.
D'ecosistemes n'hi ha per tot el planeta.
Passa, però, que l'acció de l'home a una escala fins ara mai coneguda està influint en molts ecosistemes i fins i tot destruint-los. Alguns dels impactes ambientals de l'activitat humana sobre els ecosistemes són:

* Destrucció i fragmentació d'hàbitats
* Canvi climàtic
* Contaminació
* Espècies introduïdes
* Sobreexplotació

Controlar el canvi dels ecosistemes pot ser un dels reptes més importants amb els que la humanitat s'hagi d'enfrontar. La protecció dels ecosistemes naturals que queden en parcs naturals i altres àrees protegides és decisiva.

An ecosystem is the set of creatures that inhabit a particular place, the relations among themselves as well as the physical characteristics of where they live and the relationships between environment and organisms. An ecosystem into account the complex interactions between organisms such as plants, animals, bacteria, algae, fungi and others. These interactions between organisms occur through what is called food web or food network is a series of food chains or food webs are closely related to the circulating energy and materials in an ecosystem.
It is understood by each trophic food chain or food relationship established in a linear fashion between organisms belonging to different trophic levels.
Ecosystems exist across the planet.
Happens, however, that the action of man on a scale hitherto never known in many ecosystems is influenced and even destroying them. Some of the environmental impacts of human activity on ecosystems are:

Monitor ecosystem change may be one of the greatest challenges humanity has faced. The protection of remaining natural ecosystems in national parks and other protected areas is crucial.
